Unless the schedule has been changed, today's class should be about leading good discussions. Please comment here on what you did in class, and note what you think is the most important thing you learned from the class. Before the semester ends, make sure you have added to your electronic portfolio a lessonfor a good discussion.

For the third week in a row I was late, and I am pretty sure I missed almost all of the discussion about discussions. Despite all of that, I had a great time learning from the person there (I was never introduced to who he was), as he had many interesting tips and facts about getting a job after high school. I learned that I should pretty much get a coaching endorsement, as I would get hired so much easier. The most interesting thing I learned was that when you are a new teacher, you should stay in a place for more than one year. This lets other employers know that you won't jump ship on them. Good class, even if I didn't learn much about discussions.
I learned a plethora of information from the lecture tonight. Some of the information I learned tonight was on having a good lecture and the rest of the information centered on first year teaching. I really like the idea of using the lightning rod technique when holding a discussion (using the kid that dominates the discussion to the teacher’s advantage). Another important point is making sure the discussion relates back to the students. Being able to play both sides of the discussion is also important when holding a discussion. The other information was about being marketable, coaching, contracts, people, standards, and many other things that a first year teacher has to deal with. I really enjoyed this lecture. Is it possible we could get the notes that he gave us?
About half of the class was devoted to what a good discussion is and the other to help prepare us for our first year of teaching. The discussion portion of the class was a guideline to what will help and what to try to avoid. One thing that stood out to me that I have already experienced was using that one student that has the answer and is ready to lead a discussion as a "lightning rod" for the rest of the class. I think that is the best way to use that student. It was very hard for me to just ignore him when he had his hand raised and no one else wanted to answer. It was also hard to want an answer but also not to call on him everytime. I am glad this idea was put out there. Now both him and I will be able to do what we want. I also liked the other half of the class that pointed out a lot of the things to do and not to do in our first years. A lot of them were covered earlier in the semester but some like how long to stay at a school and some tricks to stay ahead of the game were new. It was an excellent class.
Well i really like this class period because of the man who was teaching us. I have had the privlage of already knowing Coach Murphy from all of my years in track and other sports faceing Aberdeen. The most interesting thing i learned is the amount of teachers that the leacture part of a class is leaving. This was one of the things that i liked during high school history is all the good stories that the teachers would tell.
I was unable to attend this class date. I was sick with strep throat!
